Overview

How TWINJAM works with Jira

By the time scope creep reaches Jira it already looks legitimate. A ticket has a key, an assignee and story points, and nobody asks which SOW milestone it belongs to. TWINJAM reads your Jira Cloud projects through Atlassian's OAuth 2.0 (3LO) flow and maps every issue to a contracted deliverable. Issues that do not map are marked Scope Drift in TWINJAM, with the nearest clause and an explanation.

The sprint creep score shows the share of story points in the active sprint that are not backed by a contracted milestone. Delivery leads use it in sprint planning to decide, before work starts, which tickets need a change order, which are genuinely in scope, and which should wait. Because the score updates as tickets are created and edited, a sudden jump mid-sprint is usually the first sign that a client conversation has turned into unbilled work.

TWINJAM is read-only in Jira by default. If you enable it, it can add a single label such as scope-drift to flagged issues so your existing Jira filters and boards pick them up. It never changes status, assignee, estimates or sprint membership.

In practice

The widget that slipped into Sprint 14

A carrier rate comparison widget lands in Sprint 14 with 8 points. TWINJAM cannot map it to any milestone, flags it as Scope Drift and lifts the sprint creep score from 12% to 21%. The delivery lead pulls it from the sprint until the change order is signed.

The payload on the right is the event TWINJAM emits to your triage feed and to outbound webhooks, so you can route it into your own reporting.

Events

What triggers a check.

  • jira:issue_created

Every new issue is mapped to a SOW milestone or flagged within seconds.

  • jira:issue_updated

Re-scores issues when descriptions, points or epics change.

  • sprint_started

Snapshots the sprint creep score at the start of each sprint for trend reporting.

  • comment_created

Catches client requests pasted into ticket comments.

Setup

Connect Jira in about 4 minutes per site.

An admin connects once. PMs never need to re-authenticate, and you can revoke access from TWINJAM or the vendor's admin console at any time.

  1. 1Choose Connect Jira in TWINJAM and approve access for your Atlassian site.
  2. 2Select the Jira projects that belong to each client contract.
  3. 3Confirm or adjust the epic-to-milestone mapping TWINJAM proposes from the SOW.
  4. 4Decide whether TWINJAM may add the scope-drift label, then run the first backlog audit.

FAQ

Jira integration questions

Issue summary, description, type, epic, labels and story points. Sprint membership and sprint dates. Issue comments in connected projects. It never reads: projects you have not connected; attachments and linked Confluence pages; individual developer worklogs or activity timelines.

Nothing by default. Optional: one scope-drift label on flagged issues. Every action that could reach a client requires a PM to approve it first.
