TWINJAM vs. Harvest and Forecast: scope detection vs. time and budget tracking

Harvest is an excellent time tracking, budgeting and invoicing tool, and Forecast schedules your team. TWINJAM works upstream of both: it tells you which requests fall outside the SOW before the hours are logged.

The short answer

Keep Harvest for time, budgets and invoices, and Forecast for scheduling. Add TWINJAM if you want to know why a budget is burning, and to catch the out-of-scope request before the time is spent.

Context

Two different questions

Harvest is one of the most widely used time tracking tools among agencies. Teams log time against projects and tasks, set project budgets in hours or fees, get alerts as budgets are consumed and turn billable time into invoices. Forecast, from the same company, handles team scheduling and capacity planning across projects.

Agencies often ask whether they need TWINJAM if Harvest already warns them when a project hits 80% of budget. The honest answer is that the two tools answer different questions. Harvest tells you how much time has been spent. TWINJAM tells you whether the work behind that time was in the contract, and catches the request that started it.

Credit where it is due

What Harvest does well

  • Fast, reliable time capture

Timers, timesheets, mobile and browser integrations make it easy for a whole team to log time consistently, which is the foundation of any profitability analysis.

  • Budgets and invoicing

Project budgets with threshold alerts, billable rates and invoicing connected to accounting tools such as QuickBooks and Xero make Harvest a strong system of record for billed time.

  • Capacity planning with Forecast

Forecast gives resourcing managers a visual schedule of who is working on what, so overbooking and gaps are visible weeks ahead.

Where the gap is

Nothing in the stack reads the contract.

A budget alert is a lagging signal. By the time a fixed-fee project crosses 80% of its hours, the out-of-scope work has usually already been built. Harvest time entries also do not carry a link to the SOW, so the alert cannot tell you which hours went to contracted deliverables and which went to a Slack request nobody priced.

TWINJAM reads the SOW and the request channels, flags the divergence when the request is typed and drafts the change order. With the Harvest sync on the Agency plan, it also correlates logged time with contracted deliverables, so your margin view separates in-scope burn from unbilled scope.

When to use which

An honest decision guide.

Harvest & Forecast on its own is enough when

  • You need dependable time capture, budgets and invoicing for hourly and retainer work.
  • Resourcing managers need to schedule people across many projects.
  • Your contracts are fully time and materials with no fixed deliverables.

Add TWINJAM when

  • Fixed-fee projects keep overrunning and nobody can say which requests caused it.
  • You want to price the request before the hours are spent, not after.
  • You need change orders with contract citations, not just a budget warning.

Using both

Most TWINJAM customers on Harvest keep it exactly as it is. TWINJAM reads Harvest time entries through a read-only connection, maps them to SOW deliverables and accepted scope flags, and shows the result as realization by project. Signed change orders can be added to the Harvest project budget so the numbers stay consistent.

Migration notes

Adding TWINJAM without changing how your team works.

  1. Step 01

    Connect Harvest read-only

Authorize the Harvest connector. TWINJAM imports projects, tasks and time entries without writing anything back unless you enable budget updates.

  2. Step 02

    Map projects to SOWs

Match each Harvest project to its uploaded SOW. Task names are suggested as deliverable matches, and you confirm the mapping once.

  3. Step 03

    Watch in-scope vs. unbilled burn

From the next sync, margin telemetry splits hours into contracted deliverables, approved change orders and unbilled scope.

FAQ

TWINJAM vs. Harvest: common questions

No. TWINJAM does not track time or send invoices. It reads Harvest time entries and correlates them with the SOW, so you can see which hours went to contracted work and which went to requests nobody agreed to pay for.

A budget alert tells you that hours are running high. TWINJAM tells you which specific requests fall outside the contract, usually when they are first typed in Slack or a ticket, and drafts a change order with the clause cited.

Harvest, Clockify and QuickBooks sync are included in the Agency plan and above. The Studio plan covers SOW parsing, Slack monitoring and Jira scope audits.

That depends on your resourcing needs. TWINJAM does not schedule people. Many agencies use Forecast for capacity and TWINJAM for scope, and the two do not overlap.
